Library Quilting Club
1. Getting started
Fabrics
Quilt shops carry many bright prints now.
We sorted them and cut before starting. Every nine-patch set was placed in ziplock bag. Large print fabrics were designated for alternative squares.
For each 9-patch girls (and boy) were choosing a ziplock bag with fabrics. Then they were arranging 9 squares in any order. We has "T"s, arrows, crosses and many other variations.
Sewing Supplies
We set up plastic container for everyone. It had name written on top. Inside were common sewing notions: 2 needles, thread, 4 pins, scissors, thimble, pin cusion.
Those plastic containers were simply indispansable for storing finished and unfinished blocks in perfect order.
Sewing Machines
At the beginning we did not know if participants were ready to use a sewing machine. Therefore we had toy sewing machine available.
No one used it!
It was very easy (and exciting) for almost everyone to learn to operate normal sewing machine. Exceptions were 2 6-yearold quilters, who used machines while sitting on adult's lap.
Pattern
Each quilt had: 12 9-patches, 11 alternative squares, 1 embroidered block. Blocks were 6". Sashing was 1".
Reality was little different from the plan.
Some blocks were an inch or two smaller or bigger... We did not have a heart to make them rip and redo.
Some people did not have time to make enough 9-patches. They substituted with alternative squares.
Every adult quilter learned a lot about arranging various size blocks in rows.
