All quilts were made by me, Elen Morell, on B-line quilting frame with reinforced poles, Juki TL98E sewing machine and PC Quilter model PD.

Pricing.

Based on my friends and clients reaction I defined 3 categories of patterns:
  • "Oh, my God", and "Remember you showed quilt with roses 3 month ago? It was pretty!" patterns are priced at $9.99.
  • "That's pretty", and "I love the leaves/vines/animals" patterns are priced at $4.99.
  • "All this work for that!", and "Quilted quilt is better than UFO" patterns did not make it here. They look gorgeous when I draw them and terrible on a quilt. They live on my hard drive. I learn lessons from them. Maybe one day I will write article with illustrations about what NOT to do and WHY.

    Pattern Categories.

    All-over.
    Cover surface.
What to look for: Good all-over pattern should interlock. It should not look like many stripes of quilting with gaps inbetween. It should not be too repetitive (looks like a mattress, as one quilter said). High precision in positioning from one row to another is hard to achieve and requires excellent rapport with your frame.

    Border.
Cover area that is much longer than wider.
What to look for: Good border pattern flows. Main problem is lesser coverage of one of the side (imagine heavily-stitched grass with only a few flowers), or lesser coverage of both sides compared to the center.

    Block.
Cover square area. Usually block designs start and stop in a center.
What to look for: Even coverage. Temptation to create outstanding design with multiple details is hard to resist. Result are pillowed areas around the design.

    Repeat Block.
Cover square areas in a row. Starts at one side of the block and ends at another.
What to look for: Size restrictions. 12" blocks will never fit under 9" throat machine in one pass.
