4H Quilt Tricky Makeover
I am a member of the Indiana Bag Ladies quilting group.
During last meeting (April 2004) I took 12" yellow and blue 4H blocks home that were made before. There were 7 blocks total. I planned to set them with alternative blocks, add 3 borders and get bed-size quilt top.
2 borders were added and I decided to show it to my husband. His reaction was:
"Are you insane? This is terrible!"
My husband is generally very mild-mannered and gentle - this was a surprise.
Well, I knew it is coming out little too girlish - flowers, not too much contrast. But it was not terrible!
"Why?"
"There are swastikas all over it!"
Now I saw it. 4 blocks looked like the Nazi symbol. OK, it was not exactly it, but resemblance was too disturbing. Here is the picture:

For a couple of days I was thinking about a solution. These were the options I was considering:
1. Bring it to the meeting, give to another (unsuspecting) Bag Lady and make up some good reason why I do not have time to finish it. Like "my sewing machine broke... all of them!"
2. Appliqué something on top to change the pattern.
3. Rearrange squares in a block.
4. Pretend it was a World War II artifact and try to sell it to that guy with the tattoos down at the gun shop.
5. Burn it! In the next meeting make a blank face. "What's 4H? Never heard of them...".
I am happy to report that I have chosen option number 3.
Finished top picture:

Two ladies on a playground said that it is beautiful (I was working on a corners of third border), so I am pretty happy with the result.
Hope this will make you smile.
